Jospeh A. Sandford Ph.D.
 Dr. Sandford has been the president of BrainTrain, Inc. for the past 20 years. He is the primary author of a variety of different cutting edge computer software products that train and test the brain. Dr. Sandford brings a unique combination of skills to the areas of neuropsychology, cognitive science, brain enhancement and psychotherapy. He initially worked professionally as a programmer for GTE Telenet and was involved in the development of packet-switching technology still used today on the Internet. His ability to combine his interests in both psychology and computer science led him to develop the Captain’s Log Cognitive Training System, the IVA+Plus Continuous Performance Test, the IVA-Advanced Edition Continuous Performance Test, the SmartMind Neurofeedback Training System, SmartDriver and the SoundSmart Auditory Attention Training System. These products have been used in numerous research endeavors throughout the United States and the world. Currently, these products are used extensively by professionals in all 50 states and in more than 50 other countries, as well.
Dr. Sandford is a clinical neuropsychologist and the director of the ADD Treatment Center in Richmond, Virginia. He originally programmed the Captain’s Log System, and it was released in 1985, as six programs for the Apple II computer. It has grown and developed into a comprehensive set, which consists of 50 programs and now works on all current versions of Windows. The software provides over 2000 different exercises to “train the brain” in 20 different cognitive skill areas. At present, Dr. Sandford leads his own software development team and continues to create state of the art cognitive rehabilitation software that is both easy to use and comprehensive in its application.
Dr. Sandford received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the College of William & Mary. He has a Master’s Degree in Research Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, later working as a clinical researcher with the university’s Department of Neurology. He earned a second Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from NOVA Southeastern University. His dissertation was in the area of alpha neurofeedback, and he wrote his own neurofeedback software to use for his dissertation on the Apple II. He completed his internship at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. His residency was in the Department of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia.
In addition to his work as a software innovator, Dr. Sandford has had a successful clinical psychotherapy practice for the past 20 years. Currently, he is focusing his energies on the development of new software and is expanding his interests in the field of integrating cognitive rehabilitation software with new neurofeedback technology. He has recently developed a new neurofeedback system, called SmartMind. SmartMind provides a unique and specialized approach for training the frontal lobe regions of the brain. The SmartMind System is also integrated with the Captain’s Log Cognitive Training System, incorporating both the neurofeedback and cognitive training approaches to facilitate cognitive enhancement in individuals who have suffered from traumatic brain injury, attention problems, strokes and other disorders, as well as learning disabilities.
Dr. Sandford conducts national workshops where he trains fellow professionals in the use of the sophisticated brain enhancement tools that he has developed.
